Tomato is one of the most commonly grown greenhouse vegetables in Poland, but also all over the world. In the early sixteenth century tomato reached Southern Europe and Asia, while in Poland it appeared in the early nineteenth century, where, at the beginning of the twentieth century, it took on economic importance.

Tomato belongs to the family of Solanaceae or nightshades. Is a herbaceous, annual plant. Susceptible to low temperatures, it reacts strongly to light intensity.

Fresh tomato fruit (a fleshy berry) is a real vitamin bomb, rich in magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, iron and also in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, K and C.

Tomato is a source of the active antioxidant lycopene which inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
